Choosing Nordic Poles

Congratulations on taking the Nordic plunge! Nordic skiing is a great activity to keep active and enjoy the winter months! Choosing the proper equipment is key to having a good time and staying upright when traversing snow. With the right equipment, you are laying the proper foundation upon which you can improve your technical skills.

Skate vs. Classic

Due to the differences in the disciplines, sizing poles will differ between skate and classic skiing. For classic skiers, the aim is to have the poles sit at the top of the shoulder (when on skis). To get the proper skate thrust, appropriate poles should be approximately 10cm taller than the recommended classic height.

Materials

What the pole is made of will effect how it feels. Aluminum is the go to for beginners due to their durability. Fiberglass poles are lighter and more flexible which will benefit both beginner and intermediate skiers. Carbon fiber poles are the highest performance poles for skiers who want the best.

Straps

There are 2 different types of straps that wrap around the wrist. The first is the standard biathlon strap that allows for easy removal. The ergonomic grip will provide more support and control, but is harder to remove.

Grip

As with straps, there are 2 different types of grip. The most common is a plastic grip that is durable but will be colder. Cork grips will be lighter but are not as sturdy as plastic.

Baskets

Size matters! If you are skiing in groomed piste conditions, a smaller basket will be preferable. The farther you head off-piste, the larger the basket should be.
